*This program is currently only available to homeowners.

โœ” No cost to check ย ย  โœ” No obligation ย ย  โœ” Incentive up to $6,000

Why Sacramento homeowners are adding home batteries

Your panels only pay off when you can use the power they make.

โšก

Use your own power during peak hours

SMUD only pays 9.6ยข per kWh for extra solar you send back. A battery lets you store it and use it yourself during the 5โ€“8pm peak, when power costs the most.

๐Ÿ”Œ

Backup power when the grid goes down

When the power goes out, your home keeps running. Lights, fridge, internet, and the essentials stay on automatically.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ

Protection from rising rates

Storing and using your own solar means buying less power from the grid, so future rate increases hit you less.

๐Ÿ’ณ

No upfront costs

The battery itself costs you nothing to get started โ€” no down payment and no cash out of pocket to have it installed.

Takes less than 60 seconds โ€” no cost, no obligation.

How the SMUD incentive works

SMUD pays you for adding a battery and letting it help the grid during peak hours.

๐Ÿ’ต

Up to $6,000 back

SMUD pays $300 per kWh of eligible battery storage, based on 80% of the battery's rated size, capped at $6,000 per home. One 13.5 kWh Powerwall earns about $3,240.

๐Ÿ“ˆ

Ongoing quarterly payments

Tesla Powerwall owners can also earn up to $110 per quarter for one battery, $220 for two, or $330 for three or more.

๐Ÿ”‹

You keep your backup power

On peak-demand days SMUD may draw on part of your battery's stored energy. Your battery still works for backup power during outages.

โœ…

An incentive, not a loan

This is money from SMUD, not financing you have to pay back. It reduces what your battery costs.

Who qualifies

  • โœ”You own your home and are a SMUD customer
  • โœ”You have solar and are on SMUD's Solar and Storage Rate
  • โœ”Your battery is an approved brand: Tesla, Enphase, Franklin, SolarEdge, Sonnen or Eguana

Incentive amounts depend on your battery's size and SMUD program rules. The one-time enrollment incentive is $300 per kWh of eligible capacity (80% of nameplate), capped at $6,000 per household, for projects submitted for interconnection on or after September 23, 2026. You must enroll in SMUD's My Energy Optimizer Partner+ program within 90 days of receiving permission to operate. Quarterly payments are currently available for Tesla batteries only. MED Rate customers and individual rental units are not eligible.
